Before getting behind the wheel you need to be at least 17 and have a provisional licence. To obtain a provisional licence you need to complete a D1 form and send it to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) together with your passport or birth certificate. Forms are available from your local post office or you can apply online on the DVLA site. It takes about 4 weeks for your application to be processed, apply leading up to your 17th birthday to start learning as soon as possible.
The Highway Code is a must read for all road users from motorists to pedestrians. Knowing the rules of the road improves your ability to learn to drive, so get reading as soon as you can.
You should be able to read number plates form a distance of 20 meters for the new standardised number plates and 20.5 meters for the old (before 2001) number plate design, in order to pass your test.
Once you have your provisional licence you can take the theory and hazard perception test. You need to have passed your theory test before applying for your practical test. Passing your theory test will increase your understanding whilst learning to drive. Check what you'll need and what to expect below:
Your photocard licence will record your surname, first names, date and place of birth. The date of licence issue, photo expiry, issuing authority. The back of the card will include illustrations representing the types of vehicles you're entitlement to drive.

The hazard perception section consists of a series of 14 one-minute video clips, each showing potential hazards involving road conditions, pedestrians or road users. You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass. You'll need to pass both parts to successfully complete your theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other, you'll fail the whole test, and will have to take both parts again.
You will have 40 minutes to demonstrate everything you have learned in your driving lessons. You need to show you can drive competently and safely in all kinds of driving situations. Your test will be cancelled and you won't get your money back if you don't take the right things with you, You will need the following before taking the practical test:
